Why the Hatchbag cargo liner makes the perfect gift

Winter

The festive season brings a host of exciting activities, from exploring Christmas themed locations to taking your pets on scenic snowy walks. Activities such as these give you time to have fun and unwind, whilst embracing the beauty of winter.

The festive season is known as a time for giving and showing gratitude. You may be feeling unsure on what to get your loved ones at this time of year, as gift giving becomes more and more difficult when each December rolls around. We want to show you how our practical gift, the Hatchbag cargo liner, is a great present to give car enthusiasts, hikers, dog owners and so many more. With keeping a car’s interior spotless, the turn around between Christmas and New Year travels becomes a lot more seamless.

Why should you gift a Hatchbag?

We believe the Hatchbag cargo liner is a thoughtful and practical gift to give to your loved ones. At Hatchbag, we are dedicated to making our customer’s journeys run seamlessly and smoother. By gifting a Hatchbag, you are helping your loved ones out in reducing the time spent cleaning their vehicle’s interior. This allows for more time spent enjoying the adventures ahead, all the while keeping their car’s interior spotless. The festive season and the winter months are a great opportunity to adventure in your car. Helping your loved ones out in taking away that worry about cleaning, is a thoughtful gesture.

Who should I gift a Hatchbag to?

The Hatchbag cargo liner is great to gift to anyone with a car, but we think there will be people who are extra appreciative of the cargo liner. Firstly, dog owners are great people to target when you are thinking of gift giving. We know that after a walk, dogs jump in to the trunk of the car covered in mud and smelling not great. Especially in these colder and wetter months, this becomes more of a problem, and regularly deep cleaning your trunk becomes a chore. The Hatchbag cargo liner eliminates the hours spent cleaning your trunk, letting the adventures begin now. You may want to gift dog owners an odour mat in addition to the liner, to prevent those bad dog smells from lingering in your car.

When considering a cargo liner as a gift, your loved ones who are outdoor enthusiasts would be a great choice. Hiking equipment, muddy walking shoes and even camping gear can really affect the condition of your trunk. To avoid wear and tear of your trunk from heavy and sharp objects, investing in a Hatchbag cargo liner is an efficient option. The liner is made from reinforced PVC, which is durable and tear- proof, protecting the entirety of an outdoor enthusiast’s trunk. A Hatchbag cargo liner would be a great gift for those who love the outdoors!

Will the Hatchbag make my Christmas travels easier?

Whether you are transporting presents, bringing some food to a Christmas party or chauffeuring your loved ones around, the Hatchbag cargo liner has you covered. We want your travels to be seamless and believe the Hatchbag liner is the way forward in attaining this. Our cargo liner prevents that wear and tear and makes spillages easy to clean up. This means you don’t have to worry about spending time cleaning, something you shouldn’t have to think about at Christmas!

Get into the Christmas spirit by ordering a red Hatchbag cargo liner. You can embrace the Christmas vibes and also enjoy the striking colour all year round. Check out our Instagram and Facebook to see the red liner installed in cars. The colour is a Hatchbag favourite!

Day In The Life Of A Digital Marketing Co-ordinator

Hi everyone! I previously introduced myself in the last blog post, but if you are new to the blogs, I’m Evie and I am the Digital Marketing Co-ordinator at Hatchbag. We are a UK based company in the North West of England and specialise in tailor-made cargo liners.

I thought it would be fun and informative to take you through a day at work and how it looks for me. I also wanted to let our customers know what happens behind the scenes at Hatchbag. I am part of the marketing department at Hatchbag, but I get to see all the departments at work and interact with them daily.

I am always curious about what people in the marketing field get up to in a day as the term ‘marketing’ is broad and vast. Whether that’s the more technical side or the more interactive side, marketing is all about showcasing our product, so the customer can understand exactly what our product is and why they should get one! I have been working with my manager, Halley and my co-worker, Fabian, updating the Hatchbag website. I have also been interacting with all of our customers on social media and posting content. Creating content is a fun way to be informative and interactive and allows us to communicate new launches and fun happenings at Hatchbag.

Starting the day

Every morning I check my tasks and see what updates are required on the website and what should be posted on social media. At the moment, one of the tasks the marketing team is working on is changing the product pages that the customer lands on when searching for their vehicle. When you view the website, you can now see pictures, educational information and resolutions to any questions you may have when purchasing a Hatchbag cargo liner. I have been using my design skills to create banners for every car model page, so whoever browses our website, can have a visual on the cargo liner in that specific car. Prioritising tasks is a really good way for me to plan out the rest of my day and also allows for informative content and exciting content to be published together.

Social Media

Hatchbag having a social media presence is essential and a fun addition. We want to keep up interactions with our customers and also let you know what is new at Hatchbag. We are active on Facebook and Instagram at the moment, and we love to see pictures of your Hatchbag cargo liners out and about. Looking at, commenting on and posting to the social media pages is something which I do regularly, as we want customers to feel social media is a place to ask anything about the Hatchbag cargo liner. We want our social media pages to feel welcoming and fun, so you can interact with us and enjoy our posts. Look out for all the cute photos of dogs in the cargo liners. We love to re-share pics of your pets!

Working with other departments of Hatchbag

Marketing, design and customer service all interact with each other in order to make the customer’s time with Hatchbag as seamless as possible. We have a wonderful team that wants to make everything easy for the customer, so they can enjoy their Hatchbag cargo liner. I work with each department equally and enjoy learning new information from the highly experienced staff at Hatchbag. I work with customer service by replying and interacting with comments and posts. Working with customer service is also a great way for me to expand my product knowledge and learn more about what we do behind the scenes at Hatchbag.

When working with design, I like to assist on scans or fittings. This allows me to get great content of our designers at work, and to show off their talent! Scans are very interesting to observe as they allow me to see where the production of a specific liner really starts.

Shooting Content

This is my favourite task as it allows me to be creative and add a little personal flair to the Hatchbag social media pages. I have always had an interest in photography and videography and I am of the generation that loves social media! I like to incorporate what is trending online in the social media pages, so you can see trending videography and engaging posts.

I go all around the factory to shoot content as I want everyone to be able to see the inner workings of Hatchbag and how we work on a day to day basis. I love gathering content in the sewing room as you can see the talent of our machinists and how they piece together, step by step, the Hatchbag cargo liner. It really is a jigsaw, with the end product coming out as an amazing cargo liner. Shooting content with the design team is a big part of my role and I really enjoy doing this as well. It is also great to spend time with Sarah and Gabriel, our designers, who are so talented and knowledgeable.

My role overall

Overall, my work schedule looks different every day, and that is what I love about working at Hatchbag. I can shoot content, interact with customers and show my creative side in social media posts. I also love to add to the website and use my design skills to create images that are useful to the customer. I am so happy to be working at Hatchbag and I am excited to show everyone further how great our product and company really is!

Fall Adventures

Welcome to Fall

The fall months are here in full force, with the shift in the weather being most notable in the US. Fall is representative of change, transformation and preparation. As the leaves transition into vibrant and striking colours and the air becomes more crisp, it makes us feel excitement for new beginnings. It is important to embrace the season, and celebrate all its festivities. Here at Hatchbag, we are seizing the fall season, celebrating Halloween and Thanksgiving, two occasions that are staff favourites. Fall is a great time to immerse yourself in the evolving natural landscapes and explore scenic areas that host a good place to hike.

Why our cargo liner is perfect for fall

Our cargo liners are the perfect companion for your fall adventures, as we believe the cleanliness of your car is important to keep that ease and relaxation supplied by the transformative, new season. Whether it’s muddy walking boots or a smelly dog, our Hatchbag cargo liner has you covered.

The Hatchbag liner is made out of reinforced PVC, which makes it tear-proof, allowing for heavy hiking equipment to be transported without worrying about your trunk becoming exposed. We pride ourselves on the quality standard of our product, and believe your trunk should have the constant protection that you desire. In addition to the liner, you can also purchase an odour control mat in conjunction with buying the liner, perfect for preventing those pet odours from lingering in your car.

Our cargo liner, aesthetically, also can allow you to embrace the fall spirit, and match the oranges, reds and browns that are so prominent in nature. We offer our cargo liners in a variety of colours, including those autumnal shades, allowing your car to have a seasonal feel. We showcase our range of colours on our Instagram and Facebook, so feel free to have a browse and see if our fall colours would complement your car.

The most notable shift we see when we get to the later months of the year is the drop in temperatures and rise in rainfall. It is so important to explore the outdoors this season, but we understand that your car can suffer during these months. Without the sunshine drying your pets off, your car gets the brunt of your muddy return. We make our cargo liners catering to customer wants and needs. When cleaning your liner, it remains in the trunk, making your job easier and quicker. The cargo liner isn’t machine washable, however, cleaning your liner with simple cleaning products, whilst staying in the trunk, saves time and water. You can get rid of all that mud and grime quickly and efficiently.

We want the journeys to your fall adventures to be easy. At Hatchbag, we take away the worry of your messy trunk and guarantee full protection for your car’s interior.

The Great Outdoors

Enjoying the great outdoors is essential for these months as nature is beautiful and ever-changing at this time. After a brisk walk, a forest trail or mountainous hike, the Hatchbag cargo liner is the perfect accessory to maintain your clean car. Whether it’s dirt covered walking boots or a muddy dog, our cargo liner protects your car from the inevitable dirt in these colder and wetter months.

At Hatchbag, we are all lovers of the great outdoors and exploring nature. The crisp air filled walks and the stunning views allows us to feel relaxed, at ease and a sense of inner peace. It is so important to take breaks from the virtual world and enjoy nature, with the fall season being the perfect host for striking natural sights. Hiking not only allows you to connect with nature, but is a social activity that can be enjoyed with friends and family. Being outside in the fresh air is important for us, as it makes us feel better and happier. We would love to recommend some of our favourite walking routes on the east coast of North America, so you can plan your adventures outdoor this season.

Embracing this season is so important and we would love to hear all about your adventures. Send us photographs of your fall adventures on our Facebook and Instagram, we would love to see what you get up to!

Hatchbag Approved Hikes and Locations

With fall being such a great time of year to explore and appreciate nature, the Hatchbag team would like to share some fantastic areas for hikes, with additional areas you can shelter from the cold. The East Coast’s natural landscape is unique, picturesque and vast. Exploring this and appreciating your time in nature is a nice way to change up your usual routine. Here are some of our favourite hikes/ walks.

Overlook Mountain Trail, Woodstock, New York

This hike boasts beautiful views and is a nature lover’s dream! Located near the town of Woodstock, enjoy the many things the town has to offer after your hike with your dog.

Cascade Falls Loop Trail, Catonsville, Maryland

Feel free to hike, bike and run on this trail! The 3.7km loop is challenging but popular. Dogs are also welcome to join! The town of Catonsville is also great to grab a post hike coffee and explore.

Rattlesnake Lodge, Asheville, North Carolina

A scenic hike to the ruins of the 1900s estate. This combination of scenery and history takes you through stunning woodland and is a quieter route. A perfect hike to admire the essence of fall.

Rose River Trail, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Enjoy this popular route with your pet and immerse yourself in nature. With a waterfall located on this hike, enjoy the sounds and sights and make sure to bring your phone for some great photo opportunities.

Getting an inside look at The Hatchbag Company

Get to know me

Hello readers! My name is Evie and I am a new starter at The Hatchbag Company. I have recently graduated with a degree in English Literature and have always had a passion for writing. Throughout my degree, I found a love for creative writing and story-telling. I am excited to use this blog as a space to keep Hatchbag customers updated on what goes on behind the scenes at our warehouse in Birkenhead. I am thrilled to take this next step and take on the role as Digital Marketing Co-ordinator!

I am excited to be working on the Hatchbag blog and would love for to this become a space for informative and fun content. In this blog post, I will be taking you through my first week at The Hatchbag Company. I was taken across three main sections of the business, and was able to watch first hand the whole process of creating cargo liners that are tailor-made to your car.

My time in design (creating the Hatchbag cargo liner)

My time with the design team, Sarah and Gabriel, was both educational and fascinating. We covered the fitting of the cargo liner and how vision becomes reality. Design starts with a more logistical process, looking at customer demand for cargo liners and researching if these car models would work at Hatchbag. The Hatchbag Company uses software to give the designing process structure. This helps the team in creating the best trunk protector for your car.

Starting off with looking at customer trends, your comments on social media such as Facebook and Instagram asking for car models, gives  a great starting point for research. At Hatchbag, we want to create cargo liners that you want! The Hatchbag Company does extensive research on the car models, so your cargo liner that you receive is perfect. This reinforces why our cargo liners perfectly fit every curve and contour of your trunk. These intricacies are all resolved in the designing process. To understand the dimensions of your own trunk to place an order, websites such as auto trader and net car show images of the specific trunks.

A scan plan is then made when the research of the car is complete. The scan is done with a 3D scanning camera, which allows for the design construction.

We have a description on our UK website on how to fit the Hatchbag boot liner, so customers who purchase can also fit their cargo liner seamlessly. If there are any errors with the cargo liner, the liner has to go back to design where amendments can be made. This is then able to be signed off and becomes a completed car, ready on the website for a customer to purchase the tailor-made cargo liner. Our social media pages will always keep you up to date on this!

My time in operations (watching the Hatchbag cargo liner come together)

I joined Natalie to take a tour of the warehouse and better understand the manufacturing of the Hatchbag cargo liner. We see this product on Hatchbag’s website as a completed, sellable version, but looking behind the scenes, the manufacturing of the cargo liner exemplifies its intricacies and well thought out design choices. Natalie initially guided me through the ordering process, going through the website and exploring how the cargo liners are customisable and tailor made to each vehicle. She explained the purpose of elements crafted specifically for the Hatchbag cargo liner, such as the split, and highlighted the importance of the customer thoroughly reading the product guide to ensure the correct cargo liner is ordered and made. At Hatchbag, all our cargo liners are made to order in the UK, showing how important it is to follow the product guide.

When analysing social media comments and responses, I have noticed that the main questions were based around the logistics of the Hatchbag cargo liner. This included asking for measurements and questioning whether the vehicle would need extra additions to meet the consumer needs.

I was then ready to observe the delicate crafting of the cargo liners. I witnessed the precision and talent of the machinists and understood how their role transformed a design into sellable and desirable product. We first visited the cutters and welders of the PVC, the material used to make the cargo liner. They created the intricate shapes that allow for the cargo liners to be personal to each car. Large machines were operated in order to trace and cut the precise angles of the PVC, ensuring accurate measurements to perfectly fit the chosen vehicle.

We then saw the cargo liners come to life in the sewing room. The liner initially starts as a jigsaw puzzle, with the highly skilled machinists using sewing machines to carefully attach the right pieces of Velcro to the right piece of PVC. This is then transferred to more machinsits in the Hatchbag team, where the pieces of PVC are then constructed into the shape of the Hatchbag cargo liner. This is where design really becomes a visual reality. Even without being fitted in a car, you can see how all the specific design choices will complement the vehicle and protect from dirt, wear and tear and spillages.

The Hatchbag cargo liner is then ready to be shipped! The order is packaged in a water resistant bag and is delivered to the customer in roughly 5-7 business days. Inside of the shipping bag, the customer will find the cargo liner in addition to an information pack. The pack includes a manual that takes the customer step by step on the process of fitting the cargo liner and any additional extras.

In terms of the behind the scenes of checking an order off, Hatchbag uses a specific software, where the necessary details are filled in and then the order can be marked as complete.

I was also able to shadow Gabriel and Sarah, who are our design team, and watch and assist the fitting of a cargo liner. A specific car model was brought in and the fitting took place to ensure all measurements and logistics were correct. The process of fitting the cargo liner started with using a product called Autoglym, which acts as a cleanser to remove silicone build up. This helps with the Velcro tabs adhering to the sections of the trunk where the liner is placed. It was fascinating watching how the meticulous cutting, welding and sewing all translated to the cargo liner fitting perfectly in the car. The intricacies of designing the cargo liner also made a vision come to life.

My time in customer service (helping the customers with the Hatchbag cargo liner)

In my initial week at Hatchbag, I learnt all about customer service with Janine. One of the main things I took from learning about customer service was the accuracy and detail in which you phrase your responses. Many of the customer service queries were based on the functionality of the cargo liner. This meant that responding to customers in a way that is easy to understand, but still hit the marks of successfully answering all of the questions, is vital.

What I really noticed this week, was that there is lots of interactivity between customer service, design and marketing at The Hatchbag Company. When customer service receives a high number of requests for a cargo liner to be made for a specific model of car, design is then able to scan and create the cargo liner. Marketing then has the ability to promote this addition to Hatchbag’s cargo liner collection.

Customer service also involves being personable to customers and understanding about their queries. This is done through many websites that Hatchbag use, focussing on customer interaction to resolve any issues but also maintain customer relationships for repeat purchases and recommendations. At Hatchbag, we manage our customer reviews and love to reply to positive comments and resolve any issues that a customer has. Hatchbag always replies to reviews that are 3 stars or below, asking the customer about anything that could make the product better for them.

I have noticed that the care for customer opinion is at the heart of The Hatchbag Company, therefore using websites that join all reviews together allows Janine in customer service to quickly and easily reply. There are other websites that Hatchbag uses to look at customer feedback however, instead of reviews and rating, we use a website that compiles all of the comments, tagged photos and direct messages from all of the Hatchbag social media and places it in one inbox. This is fantastic tool to use as it keeps up the interactivity with customers by liking posts and comments, yet also allows for questions to be answered in the direct messages.

The phone is the easiest and quickest way to communicate with customers. However, the digital age and the rise in social media presence makes for more traction and attention on the Hatchbag social media pages, making it necessary to communicate and post to keep up customer engagement.

Blog posts, just like this, are another way that Hatchbag likes to be interactive with customers. Things such as recurring questions and upcoming sales can be answered in this form, giving the upmost clarity to the customer.

My Future at The Hatchbag Company

My first week at Hatchbag has been fast-paced, exciting and educational. Every day, I am  familiarising myself with our products and the support from the Hatchbag team has made me feel so welcome. I am thrilled to be working on this blog and will also be able to interact on our Facebook and Instagram pages. I can’t wait to share more about our cargo liners and what we get up to at The Hatchbag company.

How to clean and maintain your cargo liner

How to clean and maintain your cargo liner

Maintaining your cargo liner will ensure it offers long term protection to your car’s interior. Below is a guide to cleaning and maintaining your cargo liner.

Jump to:

Cleaning before fitting

Before initially fitting your Hatchbag cargo liner, we recommend cleaning the plastic to ensure the best adhesion possible.

Silicone is sometimes applied to the plastic in a car’s interior during manufacturing and is a common material used in valeting products.

Silicone will make it impossible for the self-adhesive fasteners to stick to your car’s plastic trim.

The silicone needs to be removed before a cargo liner can be fitted:

  • Use a petroleum-based silicone remover to clean the plastic trims the liner will be adhered to.
  • Dry the areas thoroughly, with a sperate lint-free cloth.
  • Attach one of the spare self-adhesive fasteners that come with the liner to see if it sticks.
  • If this sticks, attach the rest of the fasteners.
  • It will take around 24 hours for the fasteners to fully adhere to the plastic.

You can find out more information on cleaning your boot before fitting a liner here.

Ongoing cleaning

The Hatchbag cargo liner is specifically designed to minimise the amount of cleaning needed.

You don’t need to remove the liner to clean it and it doesn’t go in the washing machine.

Cleaning your cargo liner:

  • To get rid of everyday grime, simply take a damp cloth and wipe the liner down.
  • For more stubborn dirt use a damp cloth with a general kitchen or bathroom cleaner.
  • If the liner comes into contact with a corrosive (such as salts or acids etc.) remove it and then thoroughly rinse the entire liner to prevent the corrosive agent from rotting the threads and bindings.
  • The liners are not machine washable but they can be removed and hosed down to get rid of excessive dirt. Ensure the liner is completely dry before re-fitting.

If you regularly transport dogs in your trunk then this guide will help you protect your boot from dog hair and our range of odor mats found when purchasing a cargo liner, help to keep unpleasant smells at bay.

Ongoing maintenance

If you take your cargo liner in and out frequently or have had it in place for a long time you might find that the self-adhesive loop fastener doesn’t maintain its initial strength.

In this instance you can purchase a replacement fitting kit.

Customers who frequently remove cargo liners that attach directly to the carpet, may wish to consider our ‘Frequent Use Velcro Patches’, which reduce the fluffing effect on the carpet.

You can find these products in our Accessories section, once you go through the process of selecting your car

A guide to the Hatchbag cargo liner

Why choose the Hatchbag cargo liner?

Why choose the Hatchbag cargo liner?

In this guide we explain the unique features of the Hatchbag cargo liner to help you make an informed and educated purchasing decision.

Below we explain how our cargo liners are crafted, why we put quality above everything else and what benefits our unique design and manufacturing process offers car owners.

The basics: what’s it made of, how does it fit, what does it cost and how can it be customised?

Material: Our cargo liner is made of reinforced, soft PVC. It’s a waterproof, non-absorbent material suitable for muddy, wet dogs; wet fishing gear; watersports equipment and the like. Any moisture will sit on the surface and can be easily wiped away.

It’s also far less likely to absorb odors compared to fabric materials, meaning a wet dog smell will not be a worry anymore!

Please note, the liner is not suitable to be hosed down when cleaning and will be at risk of leaking when exposed to excessive amounts of water.

Feel: The material isn’t rigid, so it feels soft to the touch and offers support, making it comfortable for dogs to sit on.

Cleaning: The plastic material repels dirt and debris from seeping into it meaning it’s really easy to clean. The material is wipe-clean, and won’t absorb stains or liquid of any kind. You don’t need to remove the liner to wash it and it doesn’t need to go in the washing machine.

Fit: The snug fit is one of the main benefits of our product. We scan the boot of each model we create a liner for to make sure it will fit every recess and contour precisely. This makes it easy to install, offers better protection and keeps the maximum trunk space available. Scroll down to learn more about our scanning technology.

  • Rear Split

If you want to fold down individual seats then our Rear Split option will suit you. It allows you to fold one seat, two seats or three seats at a time depending on your preferences. It’s available 30/30/30 split or a 60/40 split depending on how your seats fold down.

  • Bumper flap

The bumper flap is designed to offer protection when your dog jumps in or out of your car or when moving large loads into your trunk.

  • Rear-seat flap

The rear-seat flap folds over the top of your seat protecting the top and headrests of the rear seats.

Estimated lifespan:

  • Seven years to the life of your car

We say your cargo liner will last seven years as a conservative estimate. However, customers regularly tell us that their Hatchbag liner lasts for as long as they have the car, only coming back to purchase another liner when they change vehicle. Emphasising quality above all else

We have meticulously developed the design of our cargo liners over a decade to offer your trunk the best protection available. Our attention to detail on how we design and manufacture our product, is why our design team has tripled in size over the past few years.

Above all else we care about:

  • Maximum protection against all the dirt, debris and moisture that trunks come into contact with from all sorts of everyday lifestyles.
  • Giving you as much trunk space as possible. A liner shouldn’t reduce the amount of stuff you can transport.
  • Ease of fitting. It shouldn’t take an engineering degree to fit a cargo liner! We’ve struck the right balance between a design that ensures proper protection and one that’s convenient to fit. It will take less time than you think!
  • Ease of maintenance and cleaning. You won’t need to constantly remove and put back your cargo liner to clean it, although since it’s easy to get out, you can do this if you want to!

Our unique scanning technology

At the heart of our quality design is our unique use of scanning technology. Every cargo liner starts with the scanning process. We carefully scan each model of trunk, precisely following the lines and curves to capture its exact contours and account for every recess. The snug fit provides full protection of every nook and cranny and ensures the liner moulds to your trunk like a second skin. This makes the most of your trunk space whilst protecting the trunk's vulnerable felt base and standard plastic surface.

Constantly striving to improve, we have recently undergone the latest training to ensure we produce state-of-the-art scanning templates from which we can develop our designs.

The time from order to delivery is five to seven working days. This is because we make every cargo liner to order, so customers can create a unique combination of the cargo liner and extras for their trunk. We don’t import anything—we design and manufacture all our products here in the UK with the utmost attention to detail.

How to protect your trunk from damage, smells and dogs

How to protect your trunk from damage, smells and dogs

Trunks can often get dirty, messy and smelly with having pets and using regularly. The more you use your trunk, the more often you’ll need to clean it, which is a tedious job.

In this guide, we show you the best ways to protect and clean your trunk.

In this guide:

How to protect your trunk from dog hair

Step 1: Clean the dog hair from your trunk

The first step is to remove the hair:

  • Give the trunk a thorough clean using a vacuum cleaner. You can also use a dog hair removal brush for the process to make your cleaning smoother. For those hard-to-reach places, wrap your hands in tape and take up the dog hair from the carpet with the sticky adhesive.
  • Invest in a cargo liner. All our cargo liners are:
    • tailored to fit each specific car model
    • made from tough, waterproof and non-absorbent reinforced PVC
    • easy to clean—it will only take a couple of minutes with a wipe

Step 2: Prepare the space

If you want more room in your trunk for your pet or objects, fold your backseats down. You can still install a Hatchbag cargo liner by upgrading to the Rear Plus or Rear Split.

The Rear Plus allows you to fold your backseats down together. With the Rear Split, you can fold your backseats down individually or together.

Protecting the bumper

To protect your bumper from scratches or muddy dog paws, we also offer a bumper flap. You attach this to a loop fastener strip at the end of the liner and can roll it away in the trunk when you’re not using it.

Protecting your rear seats

If you have big dogs that like to drool over the headrests, a Rear Seat Flap will help. This attaches to the top of the backseats and flaps over the headrests. For pets that like to lie against the trunk door, a tailgate cover won’t go amiss.

1. The Rear Plus

2. The Rear Split

Step 3: Cleaning your hook and loop fasteners

We have a few tricks to help keep the hook and loop fasteners free of dog hair:

  • Before fitting your cargo liner, use anti-static spray on the hook and loop fasteners. This will prevent them from being covered in hair, and make the fitting of your cargo liner easier.
  • If hair accumulates in the hook and loop fasteners, use a lint roller, tweezers, a comb, duct tape or a toothbrush to remove it. You can then use anti-static spray to prevent hair from getting into the hook and loop fasteners again.

Step 4: Keep pet odor at bay

We all know how much our four-legged-friends like to jump in puddles or lakes, or roll around in mud and sand. They love to get messy! These kinds of activities can lead to bad smells.

To keep pet odor at bay, use our odor mat. Its quilted materials means it’s comfortable for your pooch to sit or lie on. It contains an active charcoal ingredient in the middle to absorb those unwanted smells.

How to get rid of smells from your trunk

Smells can be one of the hardest things to remove from your car. Bad odors from wet dogs, spilt liquids or the many different items you carry in your boot (shopping, fishing equipment, bikes, shoes etc.) can seep into the carpet fibres and last weeks, months or even years, making that bad smell last. Purchasing air fresheners can help mask them, but will never remove them completely. That is a temporary solution.

The best way to protect your trunk from smells is by being pro-active. Don’t wait until the smell has already started before you act. Purchasing an odor mats in conjunction with your cargo liner, helps prevent smells building up in your car by protecting your trunk. Our odor mats are made with an active charcoal ingredient that absorbs nasty odors. The odor mats are made from quilted material which offer some extra comfort for a pet and can be easily cleaned in a washing machine.

Cleaning your trunk

If there are smells radiating from your trunk, clean them immediately. The longer you leave them lingering, the more they will ingrain themselves in the fabric.

Step 1: Vacuum your trunk

Vacuum your trunk to remove any excess dirt. Bits of food and rubbish may have worked themselves into the fabric, which causes odor.

Wet and dry vacuum

If you own a wet-dry vacuum, you can use it to remove any mildew and moisture. This is particularly important if you pack sports equipment (such as fishing rods and bikes) in your car. Any moisture left in the trunk will soak into the fibres and cause smells.

Step 2: Use a stain remover

Tackle overpowering smells using a strong stain remover. You can buy these from grocery or hardware stores. Spray the affected area and pat it with a cloth. Don’t rub the fabric as this can cause the odor to go deeper into the fibres. Leave the stain remover on the affected area for the time suggested on the packaging.

Step 3: Hire professional help

If the previous steps haven’t removed the smells, hire a specialist cleaner. They can give your whole car a clean and use their expertise to ensure your car is odor-free.

Suggested guide: how to clean and maintain your cargo liner.

How to protect your bumper from scratches

Tip:

If you transport smaller dogs, lift them out of the trunk yourself, rather than letting them climb out.

If you transport a pet, or regularly carry heavy objects in your car, you’ll need to protect your bumper. Pets can easily scratch the bumper with their claws when getting in and out of the trunk. Heavy objects can also cause scratches (or worse) if knocked into the bumper accidentally.

You can use a towel to cover the bumper but this can quickly become dirty and smelly. These smells will soak themselves into the fibres of the boot and cause bad odors (see above).

bumper flaps

The best way to protect your bumper is with a bumper flap.

A bumper flap is a removable accessory which covers the car bumper. It attaches to the rear of the cargo liner with a hook and loop fastener. We make the flaps from the same quality of material as our cargo liners, so they provide the same high level of protection. The reinforced, soft PVC is waterproof and non-absorbent so you won’t have to worry about nasty smells.

How to protect your car seats

If you’re a dog owner, you know they love to jump up on the backseats. Their muddy paws and drooling mouths can cause havoc with your upholstery. Similar issues can occur when you’re carrying dirty or wet equipment such as fishing tackle or mountain bikes.

Again, you can cover at least the top portion of the seats with a towel. But because these are absorbent, they can actually damage your car by soaking up the moisture and transferring it to the seats. If you do use a towel, replace them with clean ones regularly and never leave them on the seat for an extended period of time.

Rear seat flap

A much easier way to protect your seats is by combining a cargo liner with a rear seat flap. These flaps protect the top of the seats. They are custom-made to fit your specific car model and can be attached with a hoop and loop fastener.

Trunk protectors: cargo liners

Cargo liners are designed to protect your trunk from scratches, odors and damage. They come in a variety of materials and designs. These materials also vary in quality so make sure you research your choice and read reviews.

There are two types of cargo liners:

  • Generic
  • Custom

Generic cargo liners

Generic cargo liners are designed to be one-size-fits-all. They come in one standard size only, so they won’t fit all boot spaces. Sometimes they can be cut down to various sizes, but they are likely to leave parts of the boot exposed to dirt and debris, which is not ideal if you desire maximum protection.

The poor fitting can cause the cargo liner to slip, which isn’t helpful if you transport pets or expensive objects.

Custom cargo liners

Custom cargo liners are made to fit a specific model of car. This ensures that every centimetre of your trunk is protected.

They are usually a bit more expensive than generic designs, because of the added effort that goes into the design and the higher-quality materials used. Hatchbag cargo liners are custom-made from reinforced soft PVC, which is waterproof and easy to clean.

Trunk protectors: Accessories

Hatchbag offer a range of accessories that will help protect your trunk from bumps, scratches and smells. The can be added on in conjunction with purchasing your cargo liner. For a brief explanation of our accessories:

The best cargo liners to protect your car and dog

Dogs are man's best friend but muddy boots certainly are not. Cargo liners are a great way to protect both your car and your dog, but what makes the perfect cargo liner for dogs?

From stopping muddy paws from trampling all over your car to preventing dog hair from getting all over your vehicle's interior, a quality, durable and hard wearing cargo liner is likely to be the best solution. Our Hatchbag guide explains more about choosing the best cargo liner for your pets.

Do I need a cargo liner?

Whilst it is possible to travel with dogs in a car without a cargo liner, you will most likely find:

  • Dog hair on upholstery
  • Scratches
  • Damp and dirt stains
  • Odoros fabric

These sort of issues can reduce the value of your vehicle but it's possible to protect your car from all of these. A cargo liner can help solve the issues by:

  • Preserving your trunk and value of your vehicle – cargo liners like Hatchbag are waterproof, durable and easy to clean. This will help to preserve the condition of your car.
  • Protecting your trunk from dirt, grime and stains - providing a durable layer of protection between mess and your trunk. High sided cargo liners will help to keep the rest of your car's interior clean too.
  • Prevents unintentional scratches and other minor damage – to reduce the chance of damage. Quality cargo liners will also offer additional extras like a bumper guard, rear seat flaps, or tailgate covers to keep more than just your trunk clean.
  • Keep your dog comfortable –certain cargo liners will offer extras and accessories when you order in conjunction with a cargo liner. This can be selected in step 4 and 5. Odor mats and rubber mats are useful for for anti-slip purposes and our dog mats add that extra layer of comort.

Questions to ask

There are six key questions to ask before you purchase your cargo liner to make sure you're buying something that will be durable enough for your car and dog and, most importantly, to keep your trunk and car's interior, clean.

Will my pet be comfortable?

Cargo liners can be very comfortable for your dog. The Hatchbag Company offers Hatchbed mats, in conjunction with buying the cargo liner, that are designed specifically for pet comfort. These specialised mats are recommended by vets and pet care professionals. The thick and soft material will be an absolute treat for your pet!

Odor protection

Dogs love walks, fact. Dogs somehow manage to find every smelly thing possible on a walk and cover themselves in it, also fact. Whether it's wet fur or animal mess, it can really cause a stink which can also make your car smell too, the last thing you want. Reinforced PVC is far less likely to absorb odors compared to lots of fabric material used, which makes it one of the most durable cargo liner materials. This keeps your car interior smelling fresh and odor free.

Hatchbag also offer odor control pet mats: a quilted blanket which can absorb and eliminate dog smells, in conjunction with purchasing a cargo liner. It also has a unique finish in order to repel hair and dirt. The quilted design also adds an extra layer of comfort for your pet.

Waterproof

If you take your dog for a walk during any wetter periods of the year, there's no doubt they will come back soaking wet! Water damage to your car's upholstery can cause unsightly stains and bad odors, reducing its retail value when you decide to sell. In order to protect your car, ensure your cargo liner is waterproof and does not allow water or dirt to seep through to your car interior.

Easy to clean

If your dog is a messy pup, you will constantly have to machine wash your generic cargo liner. Hatchbag's reinforced PVC is a wipe-clean material, meaning you can clean it easily and quickly between trips. An easily washable cargo liner is a must when travelling with dogs and, it's even better if you don't have to remove the cargo liner in order to clean. For tips on cleaning your cargo liner visit our guide to cleaning and maintenance.

Our customers often comment on how easy our cargo liners are to clean and how great they perform in keeping the car's interior clean.

Liner size

Many cargo liners are available in universal sizes but liner size plays a huge factor in how effective your cargo liner is at keeping your trunk clean and mud free. Cargo liners that are two small will slip around, leaving parts of your boot uncovered, awaiting muddy paws to trample everywhere.

Hatchbag cargo liners are made specifically for a range of car models and are fitted with secure loops and hooks to make sure your cargo liner doesn't move an inch. Our cargo liners are tailor-made, meaning we pride ourselves on mirroring the exact dimensions of your car.

Additional protection

Our customers like having the ability to add extras onto their cargo liners such as rear seat flaps and a bumper guard to offer further protection that goes beyond your trunk.
